Today is the day that Bob and Anna got married back in 1938. I believe they went to Jacksonville on their honeymoon and continued to go to beach each year, except when they were raising kids. Joe and I bought the flowers on the alter at church and they were so pretty. I have pictures of the flowers to put up later.
They were such a cute couple and so much in love. Anna never made any negative remarks about Bob. Whatever he did was fine with her. She did not question him and went along with anything he did or said. He loved Anna's cooking. She would fix a hamburger that was the size of a 50 cent piece. It was not hamburger, though, it was ground up steak. She made him turnip greens and they were delicious.
They enjoyed walking down Northside Parkway to the shopping center. It was fun going down, but quite a hill coming up. They were in to exercise and liked walking together. When they were at the beach, they enjoyed walking on the beach. Anna used to like to throw bread up in the air and the birds would swoop down and bite the bread. They had a fun time together no matter what they did. They just enjoyed each other. Not every married couple does. I am so thankful for February 12 and what this day is history means to me.

Lock 'em up

"Lock 'em up" is the name that Anna would call Bob. She would say, "here comes 'lock 'em up'. Bob was a lockaholic. He would lock the door and never forget this routine. I am now a "lock 'em up" and that is a good trait to have. Anytime I would leave their house, he would tell me he loved me and yell to me: "lock your doors." I did as he instructed as I knew it was a great habit to have.

Each time I walk outside my house and come back in, I lock the door. When I was a kid, I remember watching Bob walk around and check the doors to make sure they were locked and double locked. He was very responsible and did not act negligently in his protection of his family. He never said to me, "did you lock your doors?" He knew I respected him and appreciated what he was trying to instill in me. I am so lucky that my Father taught me to take care of myself and be diligent in protecting myself and my family. Wonder how he is.

Bob's Birthday. It was sometimes on Thanksgiving Day and sometimes on the day of the Ga/Ga Tech football game. My Father and Mother had a party for their friends each year after the Ga/Ga Tech Football game, which was the Saturday after Thanksgiving. They would either drive back from Athens or Grant Field to run around and get ready for their annual Football Party. I really don't see how they did it. Finally, after a couple of years, they hired helpers to come and serve the food and drinks. The food was good, and I loved seeing all the friends and hearing them all laugh and have a great time.

So there was celebration for Thanksgiving, the football game and Bob's birthday. I remember the kidding that my Father received from his friends. Georgia used to loose each game to Tech. His friends would laugh and make fun of his being a Georgia Fan. He had a great sense of humor and would laugh it off. He was so loyal to Georgia and no one could sway his views of his beloved UGA. I never saw him get angry at his friends, or make any snide or sarcastic remarks to anyone. A gentleman was what he was. He just knew that one day Georgia would beat Tech and the mocking and laughing about UGA would stop.

I was 11 years old the day the "making fun of Georgia" stopped. Theron Sapp broke the drought in 1957, and Georgia finally beat Tech. It was a glorious day for Bob, and he was thrilled. I don't know if this happened on his birthday or not, but I know it was a great present for him. Now, the friends could not laugh and taunt him. That was a day my Father never forgot. The parties got even more fun for him, as the friends had to find other things to laugh about because The Georgia Bulldogs were for real and continue to be to this day.

How proud he would be of Mark Richt. He would be a fan of his, along with his Dawgs. The parties that Bob and Anna had, ceased, but that did not prevent them from having their own Georgia parties at home, toasting their Beloved Bulldogs . Bob was wonderful and I miss him so much. I speak for Bob and Anna when I say, "GO DAWGS" Love those people.

Where Are You

I am thinking about my Mother and what fun we would have together. She was so cute and always happy. She never seemed down or in a bad mood. If we were in her grocery store, we would have fun. If she were searching for something, I would help her find it. I just wanted to help her anyway I could. We had fun when we walked around Cumberland Mall. We would eat at the Food Court and watch the people walk by. We liked to go to Maggiano's and get the California Grill Sandwich. It was delicious and everyone would make a fuss over Mama. She had such a cute and friendly smile, and everyone just would come over to see her. Have you ever looked at some people and they have such a gloomy look on their face; sad/upset like? Well, Anna never had that look; she didn't even know where to find it. Anna was so genuinely interested you other people and wanted to know what was going on with them. She did not complain, and I know she had aches and pains.

Anna functioned so well at 92 because of her family and friends. Loved ones made her feel so loved and appreciated, and she thrived on that feeling. She had no discs in her spine; they had disintegrated, but she continued to walk. Her eyesight was deteriorating, but she continued to see. She could not hear well, but she continued to listen. She hurt sometimes, but she continued to smile. She might have felt like crying, but she laughed instead. So if you want to know how Anna kept going with all her problems, love from others made her keep a going. Anna did so much for me; showing me that a good attitude is a basic necessity to a happy life. I keep going down the road and even though I miss being with my Mother and Father, I know they are with me and I treasure knowing this. They were great parents and I am blessed.

Anna's Birthday

Anna Carolyn Avery Chambers was born on November 1, 1915 in Augusta, Ga. to Julia Pauline Coplan Avery and George Jackson Avery. I am not sure what day that was; it might have been a Monday. George, Julia and Anna moved from Augusta when Anna Carolyn was 3 years old. They moved to Greensboro, where Julia's family lived. Times were tough and they moved in with family on North Ave, down from the Episcopalian Church. George went to Atlanta to get a job, as the jobs were sparse in Greensboro. Anna went to school down the street and played with friends each day. She missed her Daddy so much. The house that they lived in had the kitchen out in the back. Lots of family lived in Greensboro and White Plains. There were cousins, aunts, uncles and grandparents all around.

When Anna was 10, they moved to Atlanta on Rankin Street off Boulevard, down from Grace United Methodist Church on Ponce de Leon. She attended Forest Avenue Elementary School, Bass Junior High at Little Five Points and Girls High off Boulevard, near the zoo. Anna met Bob at Grace. Anna and Bob's sister, Helen, were good friends and she was excited to meet Bob. It was love at first sight, and I have pictures that I am going to find of them and put on this blog.

Anna was always such a happy person and just loved everyone. She was like everyone's age and always had something worthwhile to discuss with anyone. She and I were soul mates. She always had an uplifting word to say and was so so thoughtful of people and their feelings. I miss her so much. She was a wonderful Mother and friend.

Georgia Florida Very Big Football Game

The Georgia Florida game just happens to be so huge. The last time I was around that game was in 2007. I was with my Mother, her friend, Frances, and my son and his friends came to see us. We did not stay in Jacksonville, we chose to stay in St. Simons, which was rocking and rolling. There are cheers and laughter and chants and more laughter. The pre game activities are something to behold. It is a group of people just raring to have fun.

Everyone is hoping that their team is going to win. Only one team will win and the other team will be miserable. This is a great rivalry and probably is the biggest game that each school will play during the season. It is about an hour bus ride to Jacksonville from St. Simons. It is fun going down, but coming home is hard. The traffic is the mother load of all traffic jams. Going in to the game is quite fun, going back home is not too much fun. All you are thinking is…”just get me out of here.” The Police really do a great job in Jacksonville.

In 2007, the Friday before the Saturday game, we looked out on the beach and couldn’t find it. It was covered with people and the beach was no where to be found. It was party city and everyone was having a great time. The party seems to never end and that is ok with everyone as they have no intentions of ending anything. The next day you either get on the bus to take the trip to Jacksonville or you get your TV ready to watch this momentous extravaganza. It is a fun time and the fans love their school and want to win big time. It is not for the faint of heart.

No Dishwasher

Granny did not have an automatic dishwasher and she did not even want one. She had a manual dishwasher; her hands. She did not complain while she washed the dishes in soap, rinsed the dishes in water and put the dishes on a rack to dry. Then she would get a dish towel and dry them, and if that wasn't enough, she would put them away. Did she get tired, I am sure; did she gripe about the work, no she did not. That was a way of life for Granny and she loved it. She always was cooking something for Gramps, and whoever else was there with them. She cooked roasts that were delicious and fried chicken, Brussel Sprouts, Cabbage, rice, cornbread, etc. She baked a cake that would melt in your mouth and would taste like more. I never heard her say, "I am so tired." She was always smiling at me. She called me Sweetie Pie. We would sit on her front porch and rock. She would fix me a chocolate milk and it was the best. We did not watch a lot of TV. I rarely remember sitting in front of the TV. They had one, but it was not on too much. There were other things more important to do over there. The house on Rankin Street was full of happiness. It had 3 bedrooms and 1 bath. That was just enough way back when. Granny and Gramps lived within their means and never wanted much in the way of dishwashers and such. They had all they needed and wanted: love.

Granny's Birthday

Granny's birthday was September 26. I kept trying to write, but something kept on happening to stop me. Granny was so sweet and such a fun person. When we would be out somewhere and someone was walking past us and dressed differently, Granny would put her hand up to her mouth and say, "Do you think she thinks she looks good?" That was so funny. Granny had a big family, but the only ones in her family that I remember were Aunt Blanche, Aunt Trude and Aunt Addie. They were all cute people. I am not too sure where Blanche and Trude lived, but Aunt Addie lived at St. Simons and Lakemont, Ga. Anna, Granny and I went to St. Simons to see them when I was a little kid. We stayed in their house and it was fun. Aunt Addie's husband was named Guy. Their son was called Guy W. and Anna called him Dub. Guy, Addie's husband, would chew tobacco and then spit in a spitume. It was pretty gross, even for a little kid, like me. We did not do much down there; just sat around and I would listen to the adults talk. Dub, Anna's cousin, did not live down there; he lived in Lakemont. He was so nice and was married to Betty and she was nice, too. Granny had a good family and when I think of her, I smile. She was from Greensboro and White Plains, Ga. It was always fun going to my grandparents' house. I am so lucky that I had a grandmother like Granny and a grandfather like Gramps.

Martin's Birthday

Martin has a birthday today, August 14. He was born after Hank Aaron hit his home run to beat all home runs. Before Martin was born, Gordon walked around with a t shirt on with Hank's home run numbers. Gordon was excited when Martin came home from the hospital and just could not wait until Martin could run through the yard or house with him. Martin adjusted quickly to his big brother and his dogs, Napolean and Desiree. He was happy to just do anything and following Gordon around was his main objective. Gordon was happy to have Martin around and they always loved playing together. Little did they know then that another brother was soon add to their fun times. One day when we lived at Heritage Farms, Martin, probably 7 or 8, asked me where the screwdriver was. I told him and asked him why he needed to know where it was and he replied, "I need it because I am going to take the swing set down today." He found the screwdriver and went to the back yard and took the swing set down.

I am late with this because my laptop had a virus and then the beach and then something and something and something. I am back to blogging and on June 16, 1998, we gathered around Northside Hospital, awaiting the birth of Gordon and Amy's new baby boy. He was born at night, not in the middle of it, but it was at night. We were so excited. One time everyone was over at our house and Joe was a little kid. Daddy Joe said to Joe, "Do you want to come over here and sit next to Daddy Joe?" Joe looked at Daddy Joe and said, "No." It was so funny and we all laughed so hard and had the best time. He loved to play with cars and we would race them on the floor. He was pretty much happy doing anything. Happy 13th birthday to Joe.

Father's Day

My Father was wonderful. More to come when I get my laptop back and can function again. My Father was very proud of his family. He loved his wife, daughters, sons-in-laws and grandkids, family and friends, church and UGA. His name is Bob. I am so lucky that I had him for a Father. He was very responsible and smart. He did not waste anything and took care of what he had. I love how he taught me to "live within my means" and to never extend myself beyond my limits. He would never have gone into debt and would be appalled at the "goings on" in today's world. You buy something; you better have money to pay for it. If you don't have money for it, you are not to purchase it. That is certainly not the motto of today's many "in debt" people. If you do not have the money for something, then you don't need it; you may want it, but that is not the way to succeed. "'Live within your means' and I mean it; do you follow me." That is what I think he might be saying to me. Who could go wrong living by that creed. I am blessed and thank God daily for my wonderful Father, Bob.

35 Years ago today

Today is Tuesday, May 31 and it is Alan's 35th birthday. He was born on Monday, Memorial Day. Joe took Gordon and Martin to the lake that morning and when they got back, I said let's go. Anna and Bob kept Gordon and Martin. Alan was born at 2:26 pm and was a 8 1/2 pounds. What a wonderful time. When we got home, Gordon and Martin were so excited to have another brother. They are a team and I am so proud of them. They were just together all the time. Gordon and Martin celebrated when Alan walked, talked and ran after them. They were always running around and laughing. I am so blessed and I know it. All the boys played and it was so much fun.

Amy's Birthday

Amy's Birthday is May 3. I was thinking of her and her special day. That night Anna Grace had a game and we celebrated Amy's birthday at the ballpark. It was fun, but very cold and rainy. Amy is a blessing and I bless the day that Gordon and Amy got together. She is doing a great job and I am so proud of her. love to Amy and happy Birthday.

I miss my Mother. Mother's Day is a great day and I am happy all day long to be with my 3 sons, daughter in law, grandson, granddaughter. I am thinking of my precious Mother and how wonderful she was and how I would love to tell her something. I know you are proud of Alan, Martin, Gordon, Amy, Joe and Anna Grace. I know you would love to be here. That is really what hurts. Maybe you hear my prayer each night asking God to tell you and Bob that I love you, I miss you, I thank you and I appreciate everything. I just wish you could send me a sign. You are my buddy and I love you and Bob. I am so thankful to have had the parents that I had. God knows that. I am also thankful for the 3 sons, daughter in law, grandson and granddaughter that I have and God knows that, too.

I had a great time being with Alan, Martin, Gordon, Amy, Joe, Anna today on Mother's Day. It was a double pleasure because Joe was confirmed in the Methodist Church. What a glorious day it was. We ate at Martin's and then we all went down to the lake. I loved every minute of it. Praise God from whom all blessings flow.

This Day in History; 40 Years Ago Today....

It was Saturday, December 12 and we were home on Wood Valley with our new baby boy. It had been a wonderful week and everything was great. To go back a week ago, no one really knew when Joe was coming home, including Joe. He was scheduled to be discharged from the army on Tuesday, December 8, 1970. I was living with Bob and Anna and waiting for 2 things: the birth of my baby and the arrival of my husband from Japan. I was safe and sound, and did not have any idea, when Bob called my name that fateful morning, Saturday, December 5, that one of the things that I was waiting for would be in the kitchen. I was so glad to see Joe. I ran and hugged him and Bob just stepped out of the way. He had been so upset about Joe going in the service and had said many times that he loved Joe like the son he never had. Our 2 dogs had a fit, too. Napolean was so excited that he jumped along the counter and turned on the dishwasher. It was a great day and it was only going to get better. Bob, Anna and I were thrilled beyond words that Joe was back home. Joe and I got in the car and went to Decatur to see Joe and Maurine. We came back, shortly, and Bob and Anna had a party for Joe. They had bought a keg of beer for the returned home soldier. Bob and Anna invited Joe's family and sister and Holt, David, Julianne and it was a time of rejoicing. Dick was in the army at the same time as Joe. He went to Viet Nam. David was in the Marines. Bob was in the Army. Even though we did not know Henry, just thought I would add that he was in the Navy. So salute to all of you! My Father, Bob, enlisted in the army, but they turned him down on account of a bad back. So the party was a success and lots of fun. On Sunday evening, we were headed for the hospital and Dr. Freeman called and said that Northside Hospital was full. So the next day, Monday, December 7, we headed for the hospital at 7:00 at night. Our baby was born on Tuesday, December 8 at 1:17 in the early morning. It was a great time and we were elated. So that was a week that was great 40 years ago today..... Picture to follow.....

Today is Bob's birthday and he was born on November 26, 1914, in Atlanta. Bob's birthday is around Thanksgiving each year and sometimes on Thanksgiving. Here is a picture of us having fun in the den, watching some great game on TV. Love the fun times. On the post below this, is a video that I accidentally figured out how to upload. It is a movie of Alan Jackson singing, "When Daddy let me drive." The first time I heard that song, I thought back to the time when I was 15 and learning to drive. I just wanted to get in that car so badly. Knowing how much I wanted to drive anywhere, Bob would say to me, "How about driving me up to Springlake (the local drugstore at Collier and Howell Mill) to get some cigars?" We would get in the car and have the greatest time. I told him I would go in and get them, and he sat in the car. I would walk in and go the counter and tell the guy that I wanted 3 Roi Tan Perfectos. He would look at me funny and I would look back at him as if that was the most normal thing for a 15 year old to purchase. Then I would smell them to make sure they were fresh, but I really did not know what I was smelling; I had seen Bob do that. Then I would pay and take them to the car to Bob. He would say, "What did the guy say?" I would say, "Daddy, he said, thanks in a funny way." Then we would laugh. Bob and several others(the wonderful people in my life; I can name them one by one) are what makes me who I am. More later.. Be sure to check out the videos below and on the right.....

Happy Birthday Anna!!!!! The picture explains it all. She loved us all so much and just enjoyed being with everyone.
It is "All Saints Day" and how appropriate that it falls on Anna's birthday. I don't need November 1 to think of Anna. She is always there in my mind. She taught me so much and her attitude was the best. She would not let anything get her down and always had a smile for you and a happy thought. Anna did not dwell on the negative; she radiated happiness and those around her caught it. She did not put herself first in any situation and was always happy to lend a hand in any way possible. She was the happiest when she was helping others. As a matter of fact, I do not know of a time when she was not helping others, be it a kind word, a thoughtful act or a helpful deed. After she said, "This is the day that the Lord hath made and we will rejoice and be glad in it", she would say, "And how are you this fine morning?" If you weren't fine before you saw her, you became fine very quickly after you were with her. I do believe that Anna is a saint, along with my Father. I am so blessed to have had the parents that I had. I may have written this in an earlier post, but here it is again. We were at the doctor and after x-raying her ankle/ foot, the doctor came and and told Anna she had a broken ankle. He left the room to go get a special shoe for her to wear for healing. Anna looks at me and says, "Where do you want to go for lunch?" I said, "Mama, the doctor says you have a broken ankle." Mama says, "I know, I heard him, where do you want to go for lunch?" A broken foot was not going to stop her from having fun and being with people. She was up for everything and always had a young spirit. Going to Athens and watching the Dawgs play was fun for her. She would always encourage me by saying, "You can do it." I do believe that Anna is watching over my kids, nephews, niece and the family. We are in good hands. I loved saying to Anna, over the phone before I left my house to go to her house, "Don't worry, Mama, we will get everything taken care of when I get there." What would I say to Anna? "Tell Daddy I said, 'Hey' and can yall send me an email, please." I love those people...... and I hope, after you read this, you will too. Football Season

If this is September, then it must be football season. I went to Athens when I was a little kid and had a great time. There is so much electricity in the air before a football game and you could just feel the excitement. On Friday before a home game, my Mother would prepare fried chicken, potato salad, deviled eggs, pimento cheese sandwiches(she grated the cheese and mixed it up with pimentos and mayonnaise), ham sandwiches on little rye bread, potato chips, pickles, veggies(before they were cool), brownies and lemon squares. She did not go get this already prepared at the store; she did all this herself. It was great food and great times. I loved sitting in the stands and watching my Father watch the game. He was so happy to be there and watching his beloved Bulldogs. He would cheer and have the best time. I never remember saying, "when will it be over?" I guess I just thought this was the way it was and I was loving it. I think I have this correct. I remember the game in 1959 and The Dawgs were playing Auburn and Auburn was winning. Fran Tarkington was the scrambler quarterback. He threw a pass in the last seconds of the game and gave The Dawgs the win that everyone had thought they lost. It was excitement that can't be described. What a thrill for me to see my Father so excited that his Dawgs overcame adversity and beat the Auburn Tigers.

There are times when saying nothing is a good thing. It is a lot nicer to look back and wish you had said something, than to look back and wish you could take back what you said. That is where manners come in. Be polite to people, show appreciation and what do you say when someone helps you, "Thank you." Saying words can hurt or help others. Calling someone and letting them know you are thinking of them may be the nicest thing they have heard all day. Who needs an uplifting word or two? What do you say to the grocery store clerk, nothing or "thank you so much and I hope you have a nice day." I learned so much from my parents' example. I saw them in action and am so proud of them and their wonderful ways. They taught me to appreciate people and realize what they have done to help you. I think a major thing I say is to thank God for all my many blessings: my family and my friends, church, business and etc. "Good words are happy and go a long way; smile when you can and make someone's day." bb

The Month of May

May is a great month and I am happy throughout May!!!! Amy has a birthday at the first of the month, it's Mother's Day, school gets out and Alan's birthday is on Memorial Day. The month is full of weather changes that are good and bad. Alan was born on Memorial Day in 1976; I believe that was the 200th anniversary of our great country. GOD BLESS AMERICA!!!! Each Memorial Day we would pack up and go spend Alan's birthday at Anna and Bob's and have a great time each second! The pool was not too warm, but it did not matter and we all enjoyed being together and just having fun. We have a very close knit family. Those days were great and now we move on without Bob and Anna and I am sure they would say, "Carry on without us," not too easy for me; I can, though because of the great family that I am so blessed to have. On Saturday we climbed up Kennesaw Mountain; great workout and then to Five Guys and then to Martin's to play golf with the tennis ball. On Sunday, my sister and brother in law invited us to their club to celebrate Alan's birthday. Pictures to follow when I figure out how to upload them from my camera. It was a great day and I am so blessed and try not to miss an opportunity to thank God for whom all blessings flow. More when I get the pictures up.......Then on Memorial Day/Alan's birthday we went to a ceremony in Woodstock then to Martin's for lunch and another game of tennis ball golf and that is great fun. Hope to get the pictures up soon.

Mother's Day

I have had a wonderful Mother's Day with my 3 sons, daughter in law, grandson, granddaughter and husband. Joe and I went to 2 churches and that was just a great amount of fun for me. The weather was great and so was the company. Martin bought the pizza and and Alan, Gordon, Amy, Joe, Anna Grace, Joe and I ate it. It was our favorite, veggie. Thank you so much for making Mother's Day a great day. I have Mother's Day each day as I thank God for my kids, all six of them.

My Mother, Anna, is not here physically with me. She is with me always and that is very comforting to know. Anna passed away in her sleep and it seems like two seconds ago to me. She was just so cute and fun. She did not complain or make sarcastic remarks. She just loved everyone and wanted to go anywhere at any time. She was ok with whatever because she knew what was really important in life. If she ordered something in a restaurant and it was not good, she would eat it and not make a comment. If she was not feeling very well, she would not tell anyone and just would keep going. I am so proud that I was so blessed with My Angel Mother. She did not ever think of herself. She always was trying to help someone with a kind word or good deed. When I was a little girl, I remember us going to take something to someone. That is why she was so happy....she just kept thinking of others and not herself. If I could say one thing to my precious Mother on Mother's Day, I would say, "Can you please come back; I miss you so much and I have plenty to tell you."

The Masters

The first time I went to the Masters in Augusta, I was dating Joe. It was a great thrill for me, even though I had no idea what it was. I knew I was with Joe and it had to be great fun. I bought a golf outfit for the event. We followed/ran after Arnie and I loved it. Arnold Palmer was such a great man, and he was so friendly with the fans. Everyone loved him and he loved everyone. He made golf exciting. Then years later, I went to Augusta with Anna. Frances, her lifelong friend, had tickets for us. Frances and her husband, Ed, bought the Masters tickets in the 50's when it was not a big deal to attend the Masters. Big Joe also got the tickets in the 50's. No one had any idea that the Masters would turn out to be the extravaganza that it is today. Frances, Anna, a friend of Frances and I went to spend the day at the Masters. We would find a place and sit and watch the players come by one by one. It was fun waiting for them. The pimento cheese sandwiches were the best, along with chips and a Coke. I wish I had taken more pictures. I will search and try to find more. The Masters is a great tradition for the state of Georgia. I am glad that I was able to attend the times I did.

Birthday

Today is my birthday and I have had a wonderful day. It used to be on the first day of spring, but now it is either before of after my birthday and sometimes it is my birthday. We started out going to my beloved church and then to my beloved Sunday School, and I get to see my precious church friends that I love. Toby made an announcement and wished me a happy birthday. I don't know how he knew it was my birthday. We came home to change and then we went to Martin's house for the birthday party. Gordon, Amy, Joe and Anna Grace, Sister and Henry, Jack and Carter, Holt and Joyce and Holty, Julianne, Steve, Prissy and Bob and Alan all came today and it was such fun. Martin got BarbeCutie and it was delicious. It was not a pretty day to go walking to the lake. It was fun inside talking and watching basketball, golf and the health care debacle. I was so happy to be with everyone and am so blessed to have the family that I have. God has done so many wonderful things for me. I hope my family knows just how much I love them. I try to let them know. Thank you God for my family and my friends at church and other places.

Bob was so thoughtful and kind, always considering other people and their feelings. Anna was just so sweet and natural; always wanting to build people up and never wanting anyone to be hurt. Bob adored her. Anna adored Bob. They belonged to a mutual admiration society. When the two of them were together, there was a party going on. They just laughed and had the
best time talking and remember fun times together. They might be sitting in the den watching TV and Bob would say to Anna, "Let's heat the meat." Anna would jump up and go into the kitchen and heat the meat. She would sometimes bring Bob's dinner in to him on a tray and would say, "Your waitress is Anna." Bob loved to take Anna on trips and she loved to travel. They had a great time going to New York and seeing all the wonderful plays like Camelot, South Pacific, The Pajama Game, Kiss Me Kate, Damn Yankees, Guys and Dolls. That was an exciting time and they loved to walk around Manhattan. They loved being together and enjoying life.

February 12 is the anniversary of Bob and Anna. They were married in Atlanta at Grace United Methodist Church on Ponce de Leon in 1938. They met at Sunday School at Grace. Bob's Mother, Eva was the Sunday School Superintendent. Anna was in a class with Helen, Bob's sister. They used to go out on a date at Piedmont Park. Then Bob would walk Anna home to Rankin Street off Boulevard. Then Bob would walk home to his house or ride the street car. (that is what they used to call buses). They moved into an apartment on Lombardi Way, which is behind The High Museum. Bob worked at Sloan and Anna worked for a dentist in West End. They gave me a lot of gifts; just to name a few are: responsibility, compassion, love of God and people. Their example is a great legacy for me and my kids. Their kindness and love was caught and taught. My parents are wonderful people and I am so proud that I was blessed to be their daughter. Anna's favorite Bible verse: "This is the day that the Lord hath made, we will rejoice and be glad in it." Psalms 118:24. Bob's favorite Bible verse: I can do all things through Christ, which strengthenth me." Philippians 4:13. I am blessed and I know it.

Granny and Gramps

My Mother and I were in Davison's, now Macy's, shopping/looking a few weeks before Joe's and my first son was born. Anna and I walked past a sales clerk that she had met with Gramps one time. The sales clerk said "Hello" to us and asked Anna how her Daddy was and Anna told the lady that Gramps had died in July 1970. The sales lady said she had wondered what had happened to Mr. Avery, as she had not seen him in quite a while. She told Anna that Gramps would stop by after work and talk to the lady and buy some candy for Granny. He would ride the bus home and present Granny with the candy. She would like it and eat some and usually broke a tooth while eating the candy. Anna knew this as she always would take Granny to the dentist because neither Granny nor Gramps drove. The sales clerk said that Gramps was such a friendly and happy man and she was so sorry to hear about his death, and she had missed seeing him. She said that Gramps loved Granny so much and was always so excited to buy the candy and take it home and surprise her with a present.

It is twenty ten and that sounds so funny. I know it will be a great year. I intend to concentrate on voting already. I plan to study what my representatives are doing and make decisions by trying to figure out if they are for me or against me. The government should be small and the people should be big. The government should be supporting me, not the other way around. I will never forget some of the last words that my Father spoke before his death: To my Mother he said: "Your hair looks mighty pretty" and on another note he proclaimed: "I hope all the liberals are beaten." He knew that the conservative party encourages work and independence and that is from whence he came. Can I get an amen to that? Why, I ask you, do we want to give money to people who don't want to work? Would Bob, my Father, be surprised at what is going on? Probably not. Would my Father be upset with what is going on, absolutely. I am sure he is looking down and saying, "You have got to be kidding." My Father has a birthday on November 26. He was born in 1914 to Eva and Evans Chambers. After a few years, he and his Mother, Father, and two sisters moved in with his grandparents and three aunts. It was a small house with one bathroom, but that was the sign of the times, and you just did the best you could. As a little kid, he sold coal door to door to make money to help out his family. Having little as a child greatly influenced his entire life. He was always giving money to his Mother and his Sisters. He was born to share and it followed him all the days of his life. He always knew that things did not matter. What mattered was his God, his family, his friends and his church. He was comfortable in his own skin. He did not have to have what everyone had; in fact, he was not at all impressed with others' possessions. He had a wife, kids and grandkids that he adored, so what did he care if someone was driving around in an expensive car or had other lavish items. He was happy with himself and did not have to prove anything to anyone. He knew in his heart that he was rich in the love that he gave and received. He was a man who did not depend on others; deciding to be self reliant all his life. Asking for help was not his style; work was. Anna was always smiling. One time my Grandfather, George, told me, "Your Mother is the happiest person I have ever seen." She was just going to be happy no matter what. She was a joy and being around her just made you feel good. It is hard to believe that she has been gone physically from here for 2 years. It seems like yesterday that I was getting in the car to drive the 19 miles to her home. She was always so happy when I saw her. I was just happy to be with her. She did not let you know if she was in any kind of pain. She just kept going and going. She was not one to complain and I can't remember hearing her say, "help me with something." I just wanted to help her do anything. I wish I could help her now with something, anything. I am so blessed that she was my Mother. Some people come in and out of your life; some people come in your life and never leave. That is the way with my Mother. My Father, too. I am so blessed by God. She was wonderful and I miss her so much. It is such a great thing to have a soul mate that thinks like you and is sweet as pie. If I could say anything to my precious Mother, I guess I would say, "Can you come back, please?"

Today is All Saints Day. This is the first Sunday in November, which happens to fall on November 1 this year. This day recognizes all the saints that have passed away. Saint is another name for holy. Isn't that so befitting that Anna's birthday is on All Saints Day. A saint does not necessarily comprise a queen or king. A saint is anyone who has encouraged and influenced people in a positive and uplifting way. That is surely Anna. She had a wonderful personality and was always interested in people and just wanted to hear how they were. One time we were driving around her shopping center and a policeman was walking around patrolling and saw Anna. He waved and said, "Hi Anna." I said to her, "Mama, who is that?" She replied, "That's David, he's my new friend." One time she broke her foot. We went to the doctor; he took an x-ray of her foot. He came back in the room and told her her foot was broken and he would get the nurse to come in and fit her for a special shoe. He left the room and she looked at me and said, "Where do you want to go for lunch?" I said, "Mama, the doctor said your foot was broken." She said, "I know I heard him; where do you want to go eat?" The foot healed; it had no choice.

November 1 is Anna's birthday. She would be 94 years young. She just loved people and was so happy to see everyone. Since my Mother has been gone, I have had so many things to tell her. She was a wonderful listener and never told me what to do. Anna was just so happy. Some people bring the sunshine into a room whenever they enter. They have a spirit of love that just seems to shower anyone they are near. One may wonder what the secret is. It is having the knowledge of God's presence in their life, and that, in turn, lights up everything around them. You just want to be around people like that. She was so up to date with everything. One time Anna and I went to lunch and there were tv's on with the sport station announcers talking about what was going on. I was trying to explain as best I could that certain football teams were trying to get certain players for next year to play professionally, and they get rated and get lots of money. As I was fumbling around for the correct words so that she would understand what was going on, she looked up at me and said, "Are you talking about the draft?"

Their lessons were taught by example that I watched carefully. Never spend more than you earn was the motto by which my Father lived. Although, he could have been extravagant at times, he never was. Grandparents

My Grandparents were very thoughtful, kind and loving. They opened their home to family at a time when there was little money. They really did not have room to house anyone, but did so, without any complaints to anyone. Cooking meals, making room for one more and sharing a small house was a daily routine for my Grandparents, George and Julia. They were never rich in monetary means, but in kindness, unselfishness and love, they were millionaires. Complaining was not a characteristic of theirs. Life was hard, but George and Julia never let on that they were the slightest bit unhappy or angry about anything. They set a tremendous example for me and my parents continued leading me in the same way.

My Grandfather was a very happy man. He worked hard each day to provide for my Grandmother. He would love to listen to a baseball game on the radio and fall asleep during it. He drank a Coke each day and after he drank the Coke, he would burp and I would laugh and my Grandmother would tell him not to do that. Then he would burp again and we would laugh again. His name was George. He did not drive a car and he went to work each day on a street car or bus. He worked in a low-paying, non-gratifying job and did not get much recognition for the hard work that he did for others. He would get off the bus and walk up the hill to his house. When I was over there, I would wait for him and run to hug him. He was always so glad to see me. He worked up in his eighties; I would say up until he died. He wanted to continue working to make sure that my Grandmother was well cared for by him. He was a devoted and loving husband. He was wonderful.

When I was a kid, one of my heroes was Roy Rogers, King of the West. That is what they said on TV anyway. He was a cowboy and I loved him. I would be outside playing and my Mother would call me in and say, "Roy Rogers is on TV now." I did not have to be called twice to come in and watch one of my favorite shows. I had a Roy Rogers lunch box, a holster, a hat and a cowboy outfit. I wore these items, proudly. No matter what kind of trouble Roy got into, he would win in the end. He was wonderful. He was married to Dale Evans. I liked her, too, but not as much as Roy. He was being interviewed one time and the interviewer asked if Roy and Dale ever had any problems to which he replied, "Yes, we have had problems, but we cut them off at the pass." I was so sad when The Roy Rogers Show was over, but I would love to hear Roy and Dale sing the song at the end.

Mother's Day

This is a day to celebrate all Mothers. My Mother is no longer here, but will live in my heart forever. My Mother, Anna, was just absolutely delightful. She did not complain or gripe about anything. She was always positive, happy and kept a continual smile on her face. If I was ever worried or unhappy, being around Anna would ease any pain that I might have. She was "with it" and never was cranky or mopey. She loved to tell a joke that was in the paper. "A guy burped and his wife said, 'what do you say,' and he said, 'can I have another?'" Anna loved to help other people. She did not concentrate on her problems; she was too busy being interested in others. There are just some people who bring happiness to everyone whenever they enter a room. That was my Mother. She had a loving spirit that seemed to bring peace and happiness to each person she met. Anna was aware of God's presence and would light up everything around her. She would ask God daily to "make his face to shine upon them." (Numbers 6:25).

My Mother

I am very blessed to have the Mother that I have. Her name is Anna. There is a story that I read that is so much like her. She did live in her own house, though, and was cared for by loving family members. "A 92 year old sweet lady, named Mary, moved into a nursing home after her husband died; her children did not live near her. After many hours of waiting in the nursing home lobby, she was happy to hear that her room was finally ready. The director was walking with the lady down the hall and began describing the new room where she would live. Enthusiastically, Mary told the director that she loved the room. The director said, 'but you haven't even seen it yet.' Mary told the director that it did not matter whether she had seen the room or not; happiness is what you decide on ahead of time. The age of the appliances and the arrangement of the furniture is not important. What is important is how a person arranges their mind. Each morning when you awaken, you make a decision; you can complain and grip about the things that can or have gone wrong, or you can be thankful for all the blessings that have been bestowed upon you. Grandmother

I was very fortunate to have wonderful Grandparents. I would go to visit them and be so happy because I knew they loved me very much. I called them Granny and Gramps. When I would spend the night, Granny would fry chicken and it was delicious. The three of us would eat the dinner that Granny prepared. Gramps and I would eat the best pieces. Granny would take the neck or crag of the chicken and eat that like it was the best piece she ever ate. She would just keep eating it so my Grandfather and I could continue to eat the best pieces. Did she ever brag or exclaim the sacrifice she was making? Never.

Angels are out there, you just have to believe. I can feel the presence of my Mother and Father in the room with me. I know that are here and they are angels. They are watching over my kids, daughter in law, grandkids and me. With both of my parents gone, I have the security that they are fine and never leave my side. I know they are directing me, as with the rest of my family, to a safe journey through life. I smile when I think of my angel parents.

It is easy to gossip and tell things about a person
that might not be correct. Who wants to hear something
nice anyway. Nice remarks are boring; a rumor and or lie
makes the best conversation. Is this the correct way to
live? No. Always think about the story and try not to
fabricate it for the sake of exciting others.

Some people talk and they don't know when to stop. Words can be hurtful if one says everything they feel. It is better to think first and then speak. It is always a good day when you can say to yourself that "you wish you had said something to someone" instead of "I wish I had not said that." It is impossible to take back words that have been hurtful and unkind. Listening is a gift and not everyone understands how to do that. Hearing what other people think is sometimes a good learning tool for you. You may have words to say, but can you hear the other person's words? Try it one day and listen to see what you hear.

Things don't always go the way we like. Is it smart to go around mad or
should a smile be on your face? I pick the smile on your face. Everyone
has some kind of something that is bothering him. Why let everyone know
your problems. They have problems, too. Just try to smile and maybe
there is a chance that you could make the other person smile back and
forget their troubles. Pretend to be happy and it will happen.

Forgetting yourself is not easy for some
people. Putting others first, before your
wants and needs, is a characteristic that
few people have. So many people today
don't know the meaning of sacrifice. If it
is there, then they are going to get it. Helping
others is a ideal way to be unselfish and kind.
It is a trait that will live long after you are gone.

nothing for herself, only to serve
God, by helping those in need.
